81% of Americans Unhappy With U.S. Government

(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A newly released opinion poll shows that the majority of American citizens disapprove of the way their country is being run by the US government.

According to a Gallup survey released on Monday, a record-high 81 percent of Americans are unhappy with the way their country is being governed, the prominent polling organization's website reported.

The question put to the poll respondents was “On the whole, would you say you are satisfied or dissatisfied with the way the nation is being governed?”

The survey, whose results are based on phone interviews conducted among a random sample of 1,017 American adults, has found that 65 percent of Democrats are unhappy with the government performance, while 92 percent of Republicans disapprove of how the US political establishment, including the executive and the legislature, runs the country.

The US Democrats control the White House as well as the Senate, while Republicans are dominant in the House of Representatives.

The poll also demonstrates that 82 percent of US citizens do not agree with the way Congress is doing its job, while 69 percent stress they have “little or no confidence” in the government's legislative branch, which marks an all-time high rate of distrust of the Senate and House of Representatives.

According to the Gallup assessment, “Americans' various ratings of political leadership in Washington add up to a profoundly negative review of government -- something that would seem unhealthy for the country to endure for an extended period.”

This comes as another Gallup survey, released on September 19, found that American citizens believe the US federal government squanders over half -- 51 percent -- of every dollar of the taxpayer money.

The decline in American citizens' view of the federal government began in 2004 as concerns rose over George W. Bush's mismanagement of the Iraq war, which broke out after US and Britain joined forces to invade the country in 2003.
